RAILWAYS FOOTBALL CLUB:
CLUB HISTORY

The Railways Football Club is steeped in hitory and earliest records suggest the current club evolved from a team which played occasional football in KalgoorlieBoulder in 1899. This team was known as the Locomotives Club.

The following note appeared in the Kalgoorlie Miner dated Tuesday, April 17 1900: “Although the footballers at Kanowna and Boulder are getting together the best men available for the forthcoming season, lovers of
the game in Kalgoorlie do not appear particularly anxious to get a start. The
Locomotives Club is calling a meeting for this evening and we believe it is
the intention of the members to join the Hannans District Association. If so,
some of the old Hannans players might join in with the Locomotives Club”.

Subsequent to the above notes, a game of football was played between
Kalgoorlie Railways and Boulder City on May 6 1900. The first Premiership
came to the Club in 1903 and in the same year the Kalgoorlie Railways Club
won the State Premiership by defeating East Fremantle. Kalgoorlie Railways
won the premiership again in 1904 and 1905 thus completing a hat trick.

Further premierships came in 1911, 1912 and 1919, 1920. Premierships
came again in 1929, the State Centenary Year, and in 1931. After a lean
period, the next premiership was won in 1939 followed by 1941 and 1945.
Premierships during the fifties came in 1952 and 1958. The 1950 Premiership
was a treble year with A Grade, A Reserve and Juniors all taking out the top
pennant. The sixties were vintage years for Railways with premierships in 1960, 1963, 1964 and 1966 plus involvement in the Grand Final in all other years except one. Railways most successful decade occurred in the seventies.

Premiership pennants were won in 1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1978 and 1979. The 80’s period was not quite so fruitful, winning years were 1983 and 1987. The most recent premierships were in 2000, 2002 and 2006. The 2000 premiership was quite an outstanding achievement, as The Railway Football club is the only football club in Australia to win a premiership in its centennial year.

A major achievement worthy of mention is the success of Dean Kemp as a
West Coast Eagles player. Dean came through Railways Sub-Junior, Colts and
A-Grade ranks before moving on to Subiaco and subsequently, the Eagles.

A major asset to the Club was the construction of licensed clubrooms at
Kalgoorlie Oval. This amenity was the culmination of many years of planning
and effort from 1962 until 14 April 1974 when the premises were officially
opened. This was a first for the Goldfields Football Fraternity and one of
which the Kalgoorlie Railway Football Club is proud.
